In 1967, Pontiac introduced the Firebird into the lineup opposite the Chevrolet Camaro. Unlike its Camaro cousin though, the Firebird’s “Coke bottle” styling wasn’t as well received with the muscle car community at the time. But nonetheless, the Firebird remained a staple in the Pontiac lineup until it was eventually killed off in 2002.
One of our readers Renato wanted to share his very special, and very pretty, Pontiac Firebird 400 coupe with the world. And share he did. Here’s his full story:
How did you acquire your ride?
I bought it from a police officer in Salinas, California, about 25 years ago.
What drew you to it when you bought it?
A friend in Salinas spotted it for sale while driving by and called me. It was bright red, aftermarket wheels, TH400 trans, console and shifter from a 1968 firebird, interior shredded and needed wiring harness. $2,500 and it was mine. I replaced the wiring harness and found the correct console and shifter. I started to replace the interior pieces and then I bought a set of Pontiac Rally 1 wheels.
Unfortunately, I was in an accident and was hit on the passenger side. It sat for 13 years until I had enough money to do the body work. I contacted Pontiac Historical Services and ordered a reprinted build sheet and window sticker. To my amazement the bottom of the window sticker said 4 speed manual and the body tag paint code FF means it was originally Tyrol Blue.
I removed the auto transmission and replaced it with a Tremec TKO 600 5-speed manual. Installed subframe connectors, polyurethane control arm bushings, Hooker headers, Magna Flow stainless steel dual exhaust and a original set of Firebird 400 traction bars. The YZ block stamp below the passenger cylinder head decodes to a 360 hp H.O. motor from 1968 (probably from a GTO), I then had it repainted the original color.

What you would change about your car, if anything?
Get rid of the after market stereo and find an original push button radio.
What have you done to make it a bolder ride?
Purchased all the correct Ram Air pieces for a 1967 Firebird.

Endless supply of 110 octane racing fuel.
